The Battle of Toulouse (721) was a pivotal clash between the forces of the Umayyad Caliphate and the Duchy of Aquitaine. Led by Odo of Aquitaine, the Aquitanian army launched a surprise attack against the Umayyad forces commanded by Al-Samh ibn Malik al-Khawlani, who had been besieging the city of Toulouse. The battle marked one of the earliest major defeats of Muslim expansion into Western Europe. Odo’s forces struck decisively, catching the besiegers off guard and causing heavy casualties. The Umayyad commander was mortally wounded, leading to a collapse in morale and a retreat of their army. This victory temporarily halted further incursions into the region and secured Aquitaine’s independence for a time. Though later overshadowed by other battles, Toulouse was a crucial moment in early medieval European history.

In the days of old, the folk did honor the memory of Saint Patrick, the holy man who brought the Christian faith unto the green lands of Ireland.
Each year, upon the seventeenth day of March, the feast of Saint Patrick’s Day was kept with reverence and joy. The people gathered in churches and town squares, giving thanks for the saint’s teachings and wondrous deeds.
It was told that he banished serpents from the land and taught the mystery of the Holy Trinity by means of a humble shamrock. Both nobles and common folk alike wore garments of green and walked in merry procession through the streets.
With song, feast, and fellowship, the day was celebrated across the realm in honor of the blessed saint.

« Battle of Aizkraukle»

Battle of Aizkraukle took place on 5 March 1279 near the Daugava River and became one of the most notable defeats of the Livonian Order. The forces of the Lithuanian ruler Traidenis confronted the crusader army after it returned from a raid, catching it in difficult terrain near Aizkraukle.
During the clash, the Livonian knights suffered heavy losses, and several allied leaders were killed, which weakened the Order’s influence in the region for a time. The victory strengthened Lithuanian resistance against crusader expansion and became remembered as a symbol of courage and strategic skill.

In later tradition, our beloved king is said to have honored the memory of this triumph by issuing a decree that every Monument Castle and fortress of the realm should display special tulip boxes in their courtyards. These tulip boxes were meant to symbolize renewal after struggle and the beauty that follows victory.
Each spring, vibrant flowers would bloom inside the carved wooden boxes, reminding visitors of the bravery shown at Aizkraukle and the enduring spirit of the kingdom.
