On August 23, 1268, the Battle of Tagliacozzo was fought between the forces of Conradin of Hohenstaufen and the army of Charles of Anjou. Conradin commanded the larger force and appeared to gain the upper hand during the first stage of the battle. Believing that victory was already theirs, many of his soldiers broke formation and began pursuing enemies or plundering their camp. However, Charles had wisely hidden a strong reserve of experienced knights behind a nearby hill. At the decisive moment, these fresh troops entered the battle and overwhelmed Conradin’s scattered army. The victory secured Angevin rule in southern Italy and brought the power of the Hohenstaufen dynasty to an end. Tagliacozzo became a lasting reminder that an early advantage means little when discipline is abandoned.
