The Midsummer Eve celebrated on June 21 marks the astronomical Summer Solstice, the longest day and shortest night of the year. In Latvia, this special time has long been associated with the peak of nature’s strength, light, and fertility.
According to traditional beliefs, herbs gathered on the solstice night possess enhanced healing and protective properties. Bonfires are lit to symbolize the sun’s power and to bring prosperity, health, and good fortune to households. Many people wear wreaths of flowers or oak leaves, believing they provide protection and vitality throughout the year. Folklore also tells of magical happenings during the solstice night, when nature is especially powerful and hidden treasures may reveal themselves.
