On 7 February 1497, Florence witnessed one of the most tragic cultural events in its history: the Bonfire of the Vanities.
Under the influence of the preacher Girolamo Savonarola, citizens were encouraged to burn objects considered sinful or immoral.
Paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, musical instruments, and luxury items were thrown into massive fires in the city’s main square.
Many priceless works of art from the early Renaissance were lost forever during this event.
Artists such as Sandro Botticelli are believed to have seen their works destroyed or even destroyed some themselves.
The bonfire symbolized the clash between religious extremism and artistic freedom in Renaissance Florence.
It remains a painful reminder of how fragile cultural heritage can be in times of conflict and fear.
