On 20 September 1187, the army of Sultan Saladin reached Jerusalem and began the siege of the Holy City. Only a few months earlier, Saladin had shattered the Crusader army at the Battle of Hattin, leaving Jerusalem with few experienced warriors to defend its walls. The defence was led by Balian of Ibelin, who hastily organized knights and townspeople to resist the approaching army. Saladin’s forces surrounded the city, bombarding its fortifications and searching for a place where the walls could be breached. After several days of fierce resistance, negotiations began, and Jerusalem surrendered on 2 October 1187. Unlike the bloody capture of Jerusalem by the First Crusade in 1099, the surrender allowed many inhabitants to ransom themselves and leave the city, though those unable to pay faced enslavement. May the memory of Jerusalem remind every commander that strength may conquer walls, but wisdom decides what follows victory.
