On 27 September, William, Duke of Normandy, finally received favorable winds and ordered his vast fleet to set sail across the English Channel. Hundreds of ships carried Norman knights, archers, horses, weapons, and supplies toward the English coast. On the morning of 28 September, William’s forces landed at Pevensey, where they began securing their position and preparing for the campaign ahead. Harold, exhausted from his northern victory, now had to turn his army south and face a new invader — a march that would soon lead to the legendary Battle of Hastings. The Norman landing became the beginning of a conquest that would profoundly reshape England’s rulers, castles, lands, and society.
