Yes, you can decide that, try adding the heroes to the army in a different sequence.

I did not think so too until I placed the shield of the lion on my non-leader hero and she gained 8 life... whether or not the other effects apply, I'd find it strange that one of the effect works while to other effects don't..

wait...so this comment is actually true? I can have every hero in my legion use shields and the units and legion will gain the benefit of this artifact?

I know that they can all put on a shield and the hero gains the bonus to hero parameter(which is useless anyway) but the entire bonus applies?

Here is what I believe: If the hero is a non crown wearing hero, the additional defense bonus will apply to the hero only and not to the troops also in his command. Example, "Shield of the Rising Sun". The non crown wearing hero will get life +10 but since he does not wear a crown, the Royal guards in the same army will not get life +5. Are you saying I am off base?
