I think you mean "carts". To solve the issue, build/upgrade more farms.

not carts, catapults

the answer is still the same, build more farms or a well, or if you'll fully upgraded kill some troops and then use that population for other troops

still doesn't make sense. How did this happen anyway?
Billy_Talent

Maybe you accidentally destroyed a farm to move to a different location or something like that.
Lord_Perseus

ok but how did my troops die anyway?
Billy_Talent

As many that will get you back to 0 population. So if you have -50 population, then 50 population worth of troops will die.

ok but still when I trained those troops they already reserved population, so why should the population that is not reserved die with them too?

I have no clue, that would be better for Crimson to answer. In all likely hood, it is just randomly selected and killed.

If I am understanding you correctly. Then this should be logical: Your "reserved" population for these troops is taken away when you build farms. You are only able to have as much population as your farms can produce food for. Let's say that I have a farm that feeds me and my wife, and we can also feed 2 more. So, we have 2 children. Then I decide one day to stop farming. We all starve! Just because at one time I had the "reserved" population to fit my family, now that the source of the food is gone. We starve.
I find analogies a fun way to explain things.
But you are correct. It is illogical for machines to die from hunger. It should be their "teams" that die not the actual mechanisms, but alas this is a video game and there must be balance.

last week i was on aragon everything fine the server went down for 10 minutes, ok np it comes back on and says i have suddenly aquired around - 2600 population 20 minutes later around 2.3k soldiers dead cool i wonder what that was about ? bit of a waste of resources i think :(

It happens that a server restart brings the population to its real balance. On other servers, it is barely visible because for each city, the discrepancy is negligible but on Aragon, where the whole population is added up in a pool, the effect can be ravaging!
I think you just experienced it...

ok thanx for that. i wonder how i got into that position to begin with ? circa 2.6k quite a lot. would you suggest i leave a pool of unused pop. to prevent this happening in future ? also if so how many ?
