Do you need rams to destroy a city's walls or can carts damage walls?

I actually wanted to know the answer to this same question. Cant your army just climb the wall? I know it takes a while longer but isnt it faster than destroying it? what types of units can destroy walls?

seige (rams, cats, ballistas)
only footsoldiers can climb walls
