i just conguered my first city so now i have two. my hero is still in the conquered city and i can't figure out how to get him back to the first one. am i supposed to get a second hero with my second city?

cant you just select your city on the valley map and send a campain to it by selecting your hero and using "aid"?

i guess i could attack another town and then hopefully he will go back to the city i want him to but it won't let me send a campaign to my own city.

no.
yes it will. Go to the attack tab and you can aid your own cities from there.
