The Battle of Aljubarrota, fought on 14 August 1385, became a remarkable example of strategy and tactical superiority overcoming overwhelming numbers. The Portuguese army, led by King João I, faced a much larger Castilian force but used the terrain, strong defensive positions, and disciplined formations to turn the enemy’s advantage against them. Careful planning, coordination, and well-timed attacks allowed the smaller Portuguese army to achieve a decisive victory and secure Portugal’s independence.
The Portuguese leader’s green-and-red banner, bearing the royal coat of arms, flew above the battlefield as a symbol of unity, courage, and determination, inspiring the soldiers as they fought toward victory.
Aljubarrota proved that a smaller army with superior strategy can defeat a much larger enemy.
