In the year of our Lord 1814 — though it might as well have been in the darker, ale-soaked days of old — there occurred in the parish of St. Giles a calamity so strange that Londoners spoke of it as if it were a tavern tale. It was called The Great Beer Flood, and though it sounds like jest, it was as real as the river of porter that ran through the streets that October day.

At the heart of the disaster stood Henry Meux’s Horse Shoe Brewery, a mighty stronghold of London porter. Within its shadowed walls towered an iron-bound vat — a colossus of oak, 22 feet high, bound by iron hoops weighing nearly a ton apiece. The vat contained 3,555 barrels of dark, frothy beer — that is, near 1.4 million liters — enough to fill the bellies of every soul in St. Giles twice over.

On the 17th day of October, as dusk fell over Tottenham Court Road, the metal hoops gave a mournful groan — then snapped like bowstrings. The monstrous vat burst apart, and a tidal wave of porter, taller than a man and faster than a horse, thundered through the brewery and into the slums of St. Giles. Houses collapsed, cellars flooded, and eight souls were drowned or crushed in the torrent.

The smell of malt filled the air for days, and the streets ran brown with foam. When the courts met, they called it an “Act of God” — no one to blame for the flood of ale.

Some Londoners say that on damp autumn nights, the scent of porter still drifts through Tottenham Court Road — a ghostly toast to the day London drowned in beer.
