Between July 4 and July 22, 1456, the walls of Belgrade trembled under the relentless siege of the mighty Ottoman army, led by Sultan Mehmed II, the conqueror of Constantinople.Yet within the battered fortress stood a defiant force—Hungarians, Serbians, and crusaders—rallied by the fiery sermons of the Franciscan friar, John of Capistrano. Though old and frail, Capistrano inspired thousands of peasants to take up arms with his unwavering faith and voice like thunder.

Commanding the defense was John Hunyadi, the seasoned Hungarian general who had long battled the Ottomans across the Balkans. Under his leadership, the city's garrison launched daring counterattacks, setting Ottoman siege engines ablaze and driving back wave after wave of Janissaries. As disease and exhaustion plagued both sides, a sudden sortie led by Hunyadi broke the siege lines.

With Capistrano waving a makeshift cross and shouting prayers, and Hunyadi wielding his sword like a tempest, the defenders surged forth. Chaos erupted in the Ottoman camp, and Sultan Mehmed himself was wounded before ordering a retreat. The fields outside Belgrade were littered with the fallen, but the cross still flew high above the city.

The victory sent shockwaves across Christian Europe, halting the Ottoman advance for decades. Pope Callixtus III later declared noon bells to be rung across Christendom in honor of the triumph. Though Hunyadi would die shortly after the battle from plague, his name became legend, and Belgrade’s walls stood firm—for now.
