A long time ago, in the year 1148 on July 24, during the Second Crusade, began the siege of Damascus. The commanders of the army of Christ were: Ludwig VII – the king of France, Baldwin III of Jerusalem – king of Jerusalem and Conrad III – the king of Germany.
During the first few days, the siege went as planned and the crusaders got close to the walls. Conrad III became famous for single handedly defeating an unusually large Muslim during these first few days.
Nevertheless, a conflict broke out between the leaders of the crusade over the inevitable fall of Damascus about whose banner will be placed over the conquered city. In the meantime, reinforcements of 20000 men arrived to Damascus and the forces of the sultans Aleppo and Mosul were also approaching. As a result, the siege of the crusaders was lifted.
That’s how an almost won battle was lost because of impatience and thirst for glory.
The 1100AD Team hopes, that this date will remind all players to keep a cool head, even when victory seems inevitable.
