Jamestown fort was typical of the era: several buildings inside of a stockade. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in North America, founded by Virginia company. Colony governance was entrusted to the Council of 7 members, which included John Smith. The colonists faced considerable difficulties, in particular, disease, lack of food and water, starvation and cannibalism, many were killed. Smith was sentenced to executed by blow to the head with club, but he was saved by a young chief's daughter, Pocahontas.
