Results of campaign in Dense Forest. You lost: Swordsman 31328. You killed: bear 814, Hero 6, Scout 25, Norman Archer 1909, Ranger 70, rat 1112, Barbarian 1263. You robbed: 0. Results of a fight in resources: not available.

Why did this happen when I had 17 heroes in my army with master defender, fighter, and leadership?

Did you have master scouting? That dude had some Normans and would be sniping you from 5 squares.

need more details but that log is very possible. for example, you could have had mele setting and were stuck climbing a wall while taking attacks.

Here's some more detail:
-I had it set on melee (experimenting)
-When my army first arrived I was offline
-When I logged in, 3/5 of my swordsmen were gone and i was fighting around 100 bears
-During the bear brawl, I would kill approximately 13-17 bears and lose at least 2k swords
-I stayed long enough to find 1 artifact, but I had to flee as the bears kept coming

Does not not explain most of the damage you took? Also, it seems you killed another player too, but it seems they would not have caused you much damage.

Bears are best keep at range while you kill them. They move very fast (They are the fastest I think) and have very high hp and attack.

Ok, let me rephrase my question. What is the reason for such heavy loses on my swordsmen when I have fought larger player armies(minus the bears) without taking hardly ANY loses? Is it that bears are the strongest, most deadly non-player controlled troop in the game? @Crimson: You say bears are best kept at range while you kill them right? Well, I have played on aragon for sometime now and through all my battles I have never been able to prevent my army from moving up close to the enemy troops. Regardless of the troop types, heroes, and fight setting I use. So it would seem inevitable that I would have to fight bears (and every other troop) up close. The reason I am so curious for my loses is because I just do not think its practical for me to lose 30k swordsmen every time I want to search for artifacts in a place where there will be bears. And to add insult to injury, I only found 1 crappy artifact. 30k swordsmen for 1 artifact (crappy) = Not worth it.

SoulReaver,

You were swords heavy. You didn't have any shooters (archers, Norman Archers, Horse Archers, marksmen, etc.) This is a dangerous tactic to use, and here's why.

You had 17 heroes. Experiments have shown that each hero commands approximately 250 units of each type. 250 x 17 = 4250. What this means is that although you had over 30k swords, only 4250 of your men get to fight in a single round. So the damage you deal would be no different than had you brought only 4250 swordsmen. The only difference here is that after you lose some of your 30k swords, on the next round you still have 4250 swords fighting.

Now add in some shooters and other units. Let's say that you had 4250 swords, 4250 knights, 4250 archers, and 4250 Normans. Each round, 100% of your army would fight. Before when you had 30k+ swords, only ~14% of your army fought dealing significantly less damage.

Now add in the BEARS!! Arrrgg!! They are fast, have huge life points, and deal lots of damage. Fighting them melee would be a suicide as you would suffer a lot of damage from these bears. And more you bring in, more of these bears would spawn. If you fight them with ranged units, then you get a chance to kill them off before they get within a brawling range.

You have learned a valuable lesson that all of us have learned the hard way in the past. Use this as an opportunity when rebuilding your army. Diversify to include knights and shooters. Your army would be stronger that way.

Indeed. I forgot this was for the Aragon server. Sorry for giving you incorrect information.

Try easier locations such as the abandoned mines or barbarian settlements.

I think chester23 did a great job at explaining Aragon tactics for you. Thanks chester23!

Its all there to be understood...

You lost 31328 swords men...
Them's heavy losses indeed, especially as you only killed 814 Bears and only 1112 rats.
But....

That's not all you killed and it is this, that the clue is.

You fought someone: Hero 6, Scout 25, Norman Archer 1909, Ranger 70, Barbarian 1263... this is their army.
Most likely someone in an order so they had order skill bonus, with much better hero skills and a much better formation.
He clearly hit you a lot more times then you hit him. Until you met him in the same line probably killing his heros. That could be 8 or 10 rounds of fighting that you took hits without you getting 1 hit in.

And judging by losses... Its my estimation that's exactly what happened.
