Another idea: we have the regular archers from the barracks and the more powerful Norman archers as mercs.

By analogy, since we have the regular crossbowmen (called "marksmen" in English in the game for some mysterious reason), why not have the Genoese crossbowmen?

The Genoese crossbowmen were among the famous European mercenaries

What they introduced might not be a new unit as you suggested, but I think this thread might very well have been the inspiration for this artifact:
